California Sno-ParksThe California Department of Parks and Recreation operates 19 Sno- Park sites (located between Yuba Pass and Fresno) that provide access to snow play areas, sledding, cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails. Badger Pass Ski Area   
Glacier Point Road, Yosemite National Park, CA

Badger Pass is actually located inside Yosemite National Park (southwest quadrant), 6 miles east of Highway 41 on Glacier Point Road.  Yosemite West is the nearest community.  Badger Pass is considered by many to be the best cross-country skiing in the entire US.  There are 80+ miles of cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails, from which you can see many of the popular tourist sites in Yosemite.

Badger is also one of the best places to learn to ski or snowboard, as 85% of their slopes are devoted to beginners or intermediates.  In addition to both downhill and cross-country skiing, Badger has facilities for snow tubing, snowboarding and an ice skating rink.

Cross-Country Skiing at Badger Pass  

You can call the National Park Service information line at 209-372-0200 for the latest road and weather updates.  Beware... There are no gas stations in Yosemite Valley.  There is a free shuttle service between Yosemite Valley and the Badger Pass Ski Area.

Also, we hear that some of the online maps may NOT be accurate -- and may send you on bumpy 4-wheel-drive-only roads.  It's recommended that you confirm any GPS instructions with
a good Yosemite area map, and follow the posted road signs.

Bear Valley Village and Ski Resort

Located on Highway 4 between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, Bear Valley
 is one of northern California's smaller resorts, but definitely has much to offer.  Especially attractive are the friendly atmosphere, smaller crowds and great discounted packages during the weekdays.

Dodge Ridge Ski Resort and Snowboard Area

Dodge Ridge is a family-owned resort located just north of Yosemite National Park. The new 6,000 square foot lodge is just one of the many reasons this is a skiers favorite.

 Dodge Ridge Ski Lessons

Dodge Ridge tends to be aimed at beginner and intermediate skiers, with 60% of their runs in these categories. The backside of the mountain is more geared to the advanced skier. Located 20 miles north of Mammoth Lakes and the larger Mammoth Mountain Resort, June Mountain tends to attract a somewhat younger crowd due to their less expensive tickets and their large variety of terrain parks, including a
super pipe for intermediate and advanced extreme riders.

Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Mountain (Mammoth Village) is located off State Route 203. It is about 3 hours south of Lake Tahoe and 5 hours north of Los Angeles and Orange County. This huge mountain offers some of the most open skiing in California and is especially popular with southern California skiers. Over the last few years, facilities have been revitalized, creating increased interest in this area.

 Mammoth Village, Mammoth Mountain, CA
Due to it's altitude, you'll find deep, Rockies quality snow that stays fresh for days after a storm. Mammoth is an excellent spot for intermediate downhill skiers as well as cross-country skiers. While it's busy on holidays and weekends, the atmosphere is friendly and family-oriented. They also have snowmobiling and a big terrain park. It's especially fun to stay at the picturesque Village at Mammoth (see picture above). There's a gondola that takes you directly to the slopes and plenty of great restaurants and shops.

Mt. Shasta Ski Park
Sky Park Highway, CA (off Hwy 89)
This ski park is located about 50 miles south of the Oregon border (between Mt. Shasta and McCloud) off Highway 89. Mt. Shasta Ski Park
is small enough that it's easy for a family to stay together or meet for lunch.  Over 50% of the runs are for intermediate skiers.

Mt. Shasta Ski Park also has two terrain parks (beginner and intermediate), as well as cross-country skiing. One unusual feature here is night skiing, which can be lots of fun.

Sierra Summit Mountain Ski Resort 
Lakeshore, CA (off Highway 168)
Located 65 miles northeast of Fresno in the Sierra National Forest (about halfway between Yosemite and Kings Canyon), Sierra Summit is popular with skiers living in the southern part of central California.  It's a smaller resort, making it easy to get around -- and very family-oriented.  The area is great for intermediate skiers (55% of runs are intermediate), as well as snowboarders, with three terrain parks and a half pipe.

 Lakeshore Resort at Sierra Summit

If you stay at the Lakeshore Resort (see picture), you can "ski in" and "ski out."  Built in 1922 and surrounded by old-growth forests, Lakeshore Resort has a rustic, all wood lodge and 27 modern cabins. There's also a general store, a saloon (with a big screen TV and a pot-bellied stove), a restaurant and lodge hall. Lakeshore Resort provides the quintessential "old fashioned" ski experience.
